circle time! (sad song. happy picture.)

by Janelle Hanchett

Happy Saturday people. I feel like crap. On the plus side, I have lost my voice due to the stuff in my chest. This is a welcome break for my family, who I SUSPECT may appreciate a vacation from the screech that is mama’s voice.

Anyway, since we’ve been talking a lot about the Rocket, I thought for circle time! I’d play one of his favorite songs ever (this one and Modest Mouse’s ‘Float On’). He asks me to play this song ALL THE TIME. So I do. And i hear his little voice singing along, every word. When I ask him why he likes it he says “I don’t know. I just do.”

Yeah. I get that. Anyway here are the lyrics to Take ’em Away by Old Crow Medicine Show:

Take ’em away
Take ’em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ’cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Some birds’ feathers are too bright to be caged
I know I’m not that colorful
but a bird just the same
Open your gate now
Let me put down my load
So I can feel at ease and go back to my home

Sun beatin down, my legs can’t seem to stand
There’s a boss man at the turn in the road
with a rifle in his hand
I got nine children, nothin in the pan
My wife, she died hungry while I was ploughin’ land

Can’t see when I go to work
can’t see when I get off
How do you expect a man not to get lost?
Every day I just keep gettin deeper in debt
If there’s a happy day, Lord
I haven’t seen one yet

Land that I love is the land that I’m workin
But it’s hard to love it all the time
when your back is a-hurtin
I’m gettin too old now to push this here plough
Please let me lay down so I can look at the clouds

Land that I know is where two rivers collide
The Brazos, the Navasota and the big blue sky
Flood plains, freight trains and watermelon vines
If anywhere on God’s green earth
This is where I choose to die

Okay so that song was a little sad…but you know what isn’t sad? THIS:

If I ever have a boy I hope he’s sweet and sensitive like yours.

Aww…thank you so much. And congratulations on your new baby!!! How exciting. Every time I hear somebody’s about to have a baby…I get all warm and nostalgic…almost like I want another. Almost. 🙂 Do you blog somewhere? I’d love to hear about the baby…Or, come back and tell us about her! (as if you’ll have time for that!).

Thanks! I don’t have a blog but I am on twitter @vanessa_michele and will be updating about the baby whenever she decides to make her appearance. Right now I’m mostly whining about being 9 months pregnant and repeating silly things my 3 year old says. Anyway, love reading your blog!

You are adorable and I love you. I was going to check out that song you mentioned…but I freaking got side-tracked (STORY OF MY LIFE) and now my eyes are burning I’m so tired. Blah. Tomorrow.

I can relate to this song AND to the picture. Awesome seal, Rocket.
